What is a bra-line back lift surgery?
Dramatic weight loss often affects body proportions by covering curves with unsightly loose skin and fat rolls. Most commonly known as “bread back”, fatty back folds represent one of the sequela of weight loss, bariatric surgery, or also aging. These back rolls do not respond to dieting and regular exercising, they can only be addressed surgically.
Back-lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that eliminates sagging skin and fat pockets from the back area to give a more contoured back appearance. This procedure may be performed as a lower or upper back lift depending on whether the patient’s bulges are located below or above the bra-line. In addition, a back-lift can act as a procedure on its own or as part of a complete body-lift surgery. The condition of back rolls is termed as “bra fat” because loose skin and fatty cells on the back are generally located in the bra-line area. Some surgeons refer to “back-lift surgery” as “Bra-line surgery”.
Are you a suitable candidate for back lift surgery?
Any person who suffers from skin laxity and fat deposits in the bra-line area qualifies as an excellent candidate for back surgery. Other than that, the patient has to be in good overall health, and ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle of dieting and regular exercising. Finally, it is important that the patient has realistic expectations of the surgery. Back-lifts do not present a miraculous solution to fat rolls; they rather correct and reduce them.

How is back-lifting performed?
Before bra-line back lift surgery:
During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will evaluate the patient’s candidacy for the procedure, assess their overall health, examine their back, and discuss their expectations and desired outcome. Finally, the surgeon has to make sure that the patient is fully aware of any possible complications to the procedure. The patient will be also be advised to fast on the day of the surgery and plan several weeks off work to heal properly.
During back lift:
Back-lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and lasts for about two hours.
The surgeon starts by making an incision which differs in location depending on whether a lower or upper back-lift is performed.
- With the lower back-lift, the incision runs across the back just above the buttocks. Saggy skin and fatty cells are then eliminated from the lower back area it is subsequently lifted and tightened.
- In the case of an upper back-lift, the surgeon creates a cut around the back portion of the bra (for women, post-surgical scarring will be concealed by the bra). That will allow the surgeon to remove the sagging skin and grease from the upper back area and above the bra-line.
The procedure generally involves a liposuction of the back to extract stubborn fat deposits and achieve a more defined look. Once the excess skin is removed, and fat suctioned, the surgeon concludes the procedure by suturing the cuts with stitches and placing a bandage on the operated area.
Post-operative effects & recovery after back-lift surgery:
After a back-lift surgery, bruising and swelling in operated areas of the back are quite apparent, but both will fade away after few weeks. In order to reduce the latter, the surgeon will recommend applying ice packs to bruised areas. Patients may also experience back pains and discomfort, which will be alleviated thanks to analgesics prescribed by the doctor. Work and non-strenuous daily activities can be resumed after a few weeks. However, any sports or exhaustive activities should be avoided for six to eight weeks after surgery, and can only be resumed upon the surgeon’s approval. Lifting heavy objects and stretching are strictly prohibited for they may engender complications to the procedure.
Complications related to back-lift surgery:
Despite it being a relatively simple procedure, back-lifting surgery may present several complications. If the patient notices any of the following indications, they must immediately address their surgeon. Complications to back-lift surgery may include infections, hematoma, fluid collection under the skin, bleeding, allergic reactions, persistent swelling and bruising, numbness, and uncontrollable pain.
Results of back-lift surgery:
Results of back-lift surgery are immediately visible. However, the patient has to wait until the scars heal and fade away to enjoy the permanent results of the surgery. The latter may take a year or so. If the patient wishes to maintain a lifted and contoured back appearance, they must adopt a healthy lifestyle (dieting and regular exercising).
