Brachioplasty : plastic surgery for arm lifting

What is a brachioplasty (arm lift) surgery?

Generally caused by massive weight loss, skin aging, or hereditary genes, the so-called “bat wings” give an unaesthetic appearance characterized by droopiness of the arms. Excess skin and fatty deposits in the inner arms do not generally decrease with diets and physical activity, and therefore require the surgical intervention of an arm lift.

An arm-lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that treats underarm bags by removing excess skin, tightening skin tissue, and extracting excess fat. The procedure primarily aims at reshaping and contouring the upper arms, therefore achieving a rejuvenated and youthful look. An arm-lift surgery can act as a procedure on its own, or as part of a body-lift surgery. Local liposuction is generally associated with this surgery.

Good candidates for arm lift plastic surgery:

Arm-lift candidates are people suffering from skin laxity in the upper arm area. If skin slackening is important and stubborn to diets and exercise, the patient could be considered for arm-lift surgery. Other criteria of good candidacy are good overall health, an ideal weight, and a healthy lifestyle.

How is arm-lift surgery performed?

Before arm lift surgery:

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will review the patient’s medical history and conduct a physical examination to make sure that the patient fulfills the criteria of good candidacy. The surgeon will also discuss the patient’s expectations and desired outcome. If the patient smokes, the surgeon will recommend that they stop before, during, and after surgery as tobacco may engender dangerous complications while carrying the arm lift procedure.

During arm lift surgery:

Depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals, the surgeon will propose two types of brachioplasty surgery that differ in terms of incision and scarring:

  • Full arm-lift surgery:  During this procedure, the surgeon will create a cut that extends from the armpit to the elbow. Upon incision, underarm fatty cells will be removed through a suction tube inserted in the incision (known as liposuction) and excess skin will be eliminated. The remaining skin is subsequently tightened and the incision sutured. Since the incision of full Brachioplasty surgery is lengthy, post-surgical scarring will be highly visible. This technique is generally destined for people who have significant underarm bags.
  • Minimal arm-lift surgery: During this procedure, the surgeon will create a small cut within the armpit (minimal post-surgical scarring). Through the incision, surplus fat and saggy skin are removed, with the remainder being tightened and sutured in place. The technique is reserved for people who have from minimal underarm bags.

Having recourse to liposuction is not systematic in brachioplasty procedure. While some patients require liposuction to remove underarm fat, others can do without it. Therefore, the duration of the procedure varies depending on whether liposuction is involved or not.

Benefits of brachioplasty surgery:

  • Removal of excess skin and fat deposits in the underarm area
  • Toned and tightened arms
  • Improved self-esteem
  • More clothing options
  • Underarms in perfect harmony with the rest of the body

Post-operative effects and recovery after brachioplasty

Arm-lift surgery is not a particularly painful procedure. The surgeon will, however, prescribe the appropriate medications to alleviate any pain or discomfort. Bruising and swelling are quite apparent after surgery, but both will fade away after a few weeks. In order to reduce swelling, the patient needs to wear a compressive garment for several weeks. The patient should also take four to seven weeks off work to fully recover, especially if their work requires physical effort. Lifting heavy objects is strictly prohibited during the entire healing process as it may cause dangerous complications to the procedure. It is also possible that the surgeon place draining tubes to empty out any liquids caused by the surgery.

Results of an arm-lift surgery:

The results of arm-lift surgery are immediately noticeable, but final results can only be appreciated after bruising and scarring fade away completely. The arms are reshaped, thinner, and more harmonious with the rest of the patient’s body. Results are typically permanent, but the patient has to adopt a healthy lifestyle by following a dieting regimen and exercising regularly to maintain toned and lifted arms.
