What is a thigh lift surgery?
A thigh lift, also known as thighplasty or cruroplasty, is a surgery that aims to reshape, tighten, or improve the appearance of thighs by removing excess skin/fat, as well as wrinkled skin. Skin sagging in the thigh area can be the result of aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss. A thigh lift surgery may be recommended for people whose skin elasticity is poor or whose body failed to respond to fitness and dieting. This surgery results in smoother and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body areas.
Good candidates for thighplasty
Good candidates for thigh-lift surgery are people with a relatively stable weight, who are committed to a healthy lifestyle, which includes proper nutrition (healthy diet) and fitness (exercising). In addition, patients with excess soft tissue along the inner (medial) thigh area and/or the outer (lateral) thigh may be considered for thigh lifting.

Different types of thigh-lift plastic surgery:
- Inner thigh-lift: it targets the inner thigh and deals with stubborn fat and sagging skin.
- Mini thigh-lift: it targets sagging tissues in the upper thigh area.
- Bilateral thigh-lift: it tightens skin on the front and outside of the leg.
- Medial thigh-lift: it reduces excess skin and fat on the upper portion of the inner thigh.
How is thigh lifting surgery performed?
Before cruroplasty:
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will examine and measure the patient’s body and take photographs for medical records. S/he will also discuss the patient’s options and understanding of all surgery aspects, recommend a course of treatment, and inform the patient of likely outcomes of thigh lift surgery and any risks or potential complications.
During thighplasty:
Cruroplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anaesthesia and lasts for two to three hours.
The surgeon starts by creating an incision; which pattern varies according to the area(s) to be treated and the degree of correction:
- Inner thigh-lift incision: It is placed in the groin, extending downward and wrapping around the back of the thigh.
- Outer thigh-lift incision: it extends from the groin around the hip and across the back.
- Bilateral thigh-lift incision: the surgeon will make an incision at the top of the leg where the lower edge of a bikini bottom or pair of underwear would be, creating a “V” shape.
- Medial thigh-lift incision: It extends to the back of the buttock crease or to the hip.
Upon incision, the plastic surgeon will remove excess skin (possibly extra fat too), tighten the skin, and close the incisions with skin adhesive tapes or clips. Finally, small tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain accumulated excess fluid or blood. Bandages may be also applied to the incisions following the cruroplasty procedure.
Scars related to thigh-lift surgery:
Thigh-lift procedure either leaves:
- A horizontal scar, placed underneath the underwear: it is the concentric lifting of inner thigh indicated in cases of moderate skin excess, as it only acts on the upper thigh.
- A T-shaped scar: a vertical scar is added to the horizontal scar along the entire inner thigh: this technique is effective over the entire thigh but the scar is visible. It is primarily indicated after a massive weight loss resulting in redundant skin excess.
Post-operative effects and recovery after thighplasty:
Patients undergoing this procedure will be discharged on the very same day. The postoperative pain is tolerable, but painkillers need to be administered for forty-eight to seventy-two hours. At this stage, the patient should wear a compressive girdle for three weeks. Recovery from this type of surgery is always quick and satisfying. However, the patient will be specifically instructed on how to care for the surgical site(s), as they should not be subjected to excessive force or abrasion. Oral or applied medications that assist healing will be prescribed by the surgeon. The patient will also be told when to resume normal activity.
Thigh lift plastic surgery results:
Thigh-lift results are visible, almost immediately. Yet, it may take several months for the full development of the final result. After a Thigh-lift, the skin quality is improved, in both appearance and feel. As the body ages, it is normal to lose some firmness. However, most of the initial improvement should persist.
